In total, between 1985 and 2018, they increased by 589 km2 (+5%), which roughly corresponds to the extent of Lake Geneva. These increases relate almost exclusively to mountain regions, where trees have grown back onto unused alpine pastures and where we are also beginning to observe a rise in the tree line due to climate change.
